The series of lectures deals with four main topics. While "Looking through the microscope" we will study the architecture of cells and their functional compartments. We will follow "The molecules of life" on the way from DNA to proteins and learn about mechanisms of gene regulation and manipulation, heterologous expression of proteins of interest in cell systems, gene knock-out and knock-down as well as transgenic approaches. "Methods and tools in cell biology" are the prerequisites for cell culture, preparation and analysis of cell and tissue samples, staining techniques, microscopy techniques, and physiological recording and imaging techniques. "Signalling and communication" is mediated by receptors, signal transduction cascades, ion channels, second messengers etc.
For some lectures we plan to include demonstrations in the lab (e.g. sectioning, immunohistochemistry and confocal microscopy, patch-clamp recordings, calcium imaging).
